TaylorMade M2 Driver Different Variations, Review And More

If you are considering a TaylorMade M2 driver to include in your golf bag, you may be wondering if it meets up to its hype.

Perhaps it is time for you to upgrade your driver. The driver is getting old and worn out. Or, perhaps your golf swing has changed. You may have heard good things about the TaylorMade M2 driver, and you want to know if it is worth the few hundred bucks to trade up to it.

What is the TaylorMade M2 Driver and How Does It Work?

The TaylorMade M2 driver is a particular brand of golf club driver made by the TaylorMade Golf Company, Inc. The M2 driver supposedly has all the latest in golf club technology. It is designed to help improve the distance the ball flies and keep it straight down the center of the fairway.

Of course, all golf drivers promise to do that – have the ball fly straight and fast. The question is, does the TaylorMade M2 driver live up to that promise?

The TaylorMade M2 driver was also designed to be more “forgiving” than other golf clubs.

What exactly does it mean for a golf club to be “forgiving”? Basically, a golf club that is more forgiving is designed to work well even if your golf swing kind of sucks. It will help with a weak golf swing and when you do not contact the ball exactly right.

So, you, as the golfer, make a mistake with your golf swing. The “forgiving” golf club forgives you and somehow fixes that for you. Ideally.

How well these “forgiving” golf clubs work is up for debate. But, that is supposedly one of the main features of the M2 line of golf club drivers by TaylorMade.

Different Variations of TaylorMade M2 Drivers

Before we continue, we should get clear on which version of the TaylorMade M2 driver we are talking about.

The M2 driver by TaylorMade is currently sold in four versions on the TaylorMade website (as of this writing):

  • 2017 M2 Driver (SKU # DW-WZ599)
  • M2 D-Type Driver (SKU # DW-WZ600)
  • M2 Ladies Driver (SKU # DW-WZ442)
  • 2016 M2 Driver (SKU # DW-WZ441)

The 2016 M2 driver designed by Taylormade was extremely well-received by the golf community. For a time, this high-tech golf club was allegedly one of the favorites on the golf course.

The TaylorMade M2 golf club is just one type of driver that TaylorMade Golf Company sells through its website and at retail golf club shops. Here are some of the other types of drivers that TaylorMade sells:

  • M3 Driver
  • M3 440 Driver
  • M4 Driver
  • M4 D-Type Driver
  • M4 Ladies Driver
  • M4 Ladies D-Type Driver
  • Kalea Ladies Driver
  • M1 Driver
  • M1 440 Driver
  • M1 Driver
  • M1 430 Driver

The M2 driver from TaylorMade is now actually one of their older models, even though it was just launched a few years ago. It, along with the TaylorMade M1 driver, has been technically “replaced” by the M3 and M4 golf drivers. Though, for the foreseeable future, the old M1 and M2 drivers are still for sale on the TaylorMade website.

This just goes to show you how fast the world of golf club technology is changing these days. Companies such as TaylorMade need to constantly come up with new models of golf clubs, especially drivers, to promote sales and get press attention.

For the most part, we will be talking about the 2017 model of the TaylorMade M2 driver in this review. The 2017 M2 driver is by default a men’s driver. There is no women’s version of the 2017 M2 by TaylorMade. Women who are interested in this club will either need to get the men’s version (typically with a shorter shaft, unless you are a very tall female) or use the 2016 M2 driver by TaylorMade.

The commentary in the rest of this article will be referring to the 2017 men’s M2 driver, unless explicitly stated otherwise.

What Makes the TaylorMade M2 Driver Unique

TaylorMade M2 Driver Unique

It is perhaps best to allow TaylorMade to describe what makes their M2 driver technology so great, as their description is quite technical:

“The new lower density 9-1-1 Titanium body, 6-layer carbon composite crown and minimal sound ribs allowed for 25g of discretionary mass to be relocated low and back in the sole of the club. Together, these applications combine to increase the overall inertia of the M2 driver without sacrificing low CG, hot trajectory, or aerodynamic performance.”

The bottom line is that this driver is designed to be highly forgiving while being lightweight and easy to hit. Based on the many happy customer reviews, this is precisely what this club does.

Here are the prices for TaylorMade M2 drivers from their website:

This is the most recent version of the TaylorMade M2 driver from 2017. It boasts “reinvented multi-material construction and advanced geometric shaping.” The 2017 TaylorMade M2 driver includes a Speed Pocket and a new Geocoustic design, which makes it three times as flexible as the original TaylorMade M2 driver.

M2 D-Type Driver (SKU # DW-WZ600)

The D-Type version of the TaylorMade M2 driver is designed for golf players who have a strong slice in their golf swing.

“The D-Type driver (“D” representing draw) combines multiple draw-biasing design technologies to deliver an average of 12 yards—and up to 20 yards—of built-in draw-bias to help players who consistently fight fade-to-slice trajectories find more fairways.”

M2 Ladies Driver (SKU # DW-WZ442)

It appears that the M2 Ladies driver currently on sale at the TaylorMade website (as of this writing) is last year’s technology (without the new features of the 2017 TaylorMade M2 driver). This is one big complaint some women golfers have about golf clubs – not only are fewer options made for women golfers, but they are not updated as frequently as men’s golf clubs.

2016 M2 Driver (SKU # DW-WZ441)

This previous version of the M2 driver was designed to provide both “exceptional distance and forgiveness at the same time.” It is designed to be super lightweight and thin, and features an extremely strong Carbon Composite crown. You can get this club with a variety of no-charge aftermarket shafts to fit your particular style of golf swing.

Public Perception (Other TaylorMade M2 Driver Reviews)

The 2017 TaylorMade M2 driver gets four of out five stars on Amazon. On the TaylorMade website, the reviews are a little better with a four and a half out of the five-star average. Here is a breakdown of the reactions by customers of the TaylorMade M2 driver:

1. Positive Reviews (Four and Five-Star Reviews)

The people who have positive things to say about the M2 golf club driver really seem to love this club. “Amazing” is a common adjective used to describe the 2017 TaylorMade M2 driver. The most common positive attribute given to this club is that it increases the distance the golf ball flies. Here is a snippet from one happy customer, who wrote this on the TaylorMade website:

“I have never felt more confident. This driver has allowed me to increase my distance substantially, bringing birdie opportunities into play more often during a tournament. I love this driver.”

2. Negative Reviews (One and Two Star Reviews)

One and two-star reviews are not common for the new TaylorMade M2 driver, but they do exist. One person complained that the 2017 M2 driver was too loud when it hit the ball and so they reverted back to the 2016 M2 driver.

QA (Quality Assurance) is an issue for some reviewers. One claimed that the driver’s head decal is not placed consistently, which could affect the perception of the person using the club.

Other golfers have had issues with the customizations offered by TaylorMade, as noted in one review of the 2016 version of the M2 – the customizations to the club were apparently done poorly and had to be returned to be redone.

Apparently, the manual for the 2017 version of the club is not included, and it is hard to find online. The manual that can be found has a very tiny font that is supposedly hard to read.

3. Neutral Reviews (Three Star Reviews)

You cannot find many three-star reviews of this golf club or the 2016 version. People either seem to love it or hate it, so the majority of the reviews are either four stars and up or two stars and down (with most of the reviews being positive by far). One guy did not like the club, so he gave it to his wife. Whether she liked it or not is not mentioned.

One of the three-star reviews for the 2016 version of the M2 golf driver by TaylorMade simply called it “average.”

How It Compares

The TaylorMade M2 driver typically gets great reviews, and whether you choose to use this club or some of the newer models (M3 or M4) really depends on your personal golf swing. If you can, you should go to a golf store where you can try out the different clubs to see what works best for you.

Do you need a club that is forgiving? Are you interested in having a really straight drive? These are questions you should ask when assessing clubs.

For example, the M4 driver has a new driver-face design called “Twist Face” that may be perfect for someone who tends to slice the golf ball left or right on a regular basis. If you already hit your drives straight but need more power, this may not be the club for you.

What We Think

We like the TaylorMade M2 driver and its variations, and hope that it will continue to be sold by TaylorMade Golf Company even as it continues to roll out new models. This driver is a nice solid club without a lot of adjusting to fiddle with (as with the M1 model). Most people could probably pick up one of these clubs, and, if properly fitted, do quite well with it.

Coupons and Deals

Since the TaylorMade M2 golf clubs are now the “old” model by TaylorMade in its line of M# golf clubs, you will get an automatic discount on purchase. The newer M3 and M4 model drivers by TaylorMade are currently $429.99 to $499.99.

In contrast, you can purchase a brand new TaylorMade M2 golf club on the TaylorMade website for $249.99 to $299.99. This is $100 off the price of the newest drivers.

If that discount is still not enough for you, you can find deals on M2 drivers on eBay, which of course, can be a tricky thing as sometimes you don’t know whether you are getting the real thing or a knock-off.

You can also try websites such as 2nd Swing, which sell “pre-swung golf clubs,” aka used or “pre-owned” golf clubs. Currently, their selection of used 2017 M2 drivers is not that cheap and costs about the same as what you would find on the TaylorMade website. However, you can get a TaylorMade 2016 M2 driver for $149.99.

You might also check the official TaylorMade Certified Pre-Owned Golf Clubs website. These used golf clubs and checked and inspected, then certified by TaylorMade, so you know you are getting a good club. They offer 2017 M2 golf drivers starting from $239.99.

Amazon’s prices are not that different from those on the TaylorMade website.

You might also want to try your local golf shops. Because the M2 line of drivers is now officially discontinued, these still very good quality clubs may possibly be found at a discount. Eventually, they may end up in Clearance.

Get one if you see one that you like, because you may not be able to purchase a new TaylorMade M2 driver soon.
